Electronic drum sets are used by many highly-paid professional musicians these days. But due to advances in technology, these high-tech drums are now available to everyday drummers who just want to take advantage of the many benefits of Electronic drum sets. Here are just a few.
First of all, anyone who lives in close proximity to other people, such as apartment or condo dwellers, can forget about being able to practice at home on a regular acoustic drum kit. Well, unless they like visits from their friendly local police! However, because the volume of electronic drums can be controlled, or even set to output through headphones, you can play without worrying about the neighbors - as long as it's not three a.m.
Secondly, many people don't really have the space for a full acoustic drum kit. However, electronic drum sets take up much less space and are a lot easier to move around. So in the worst case lack-of-space scenario, you can put electronic drums in a closet and easily take them out to play. Doing the same with acoustic drums might not even be possible (depending on the size of your closet) and would probably be more hassle than it's worth.
Electronic drum sets also offer a much wider choice of available sounds. While you can tune your acoustic drums to change the tone, it's still basically the same sound. Electronic drums can offer a great variety of effects, without the complicated manual tuning required with traditional drums.
Of course, like anything, electronic drum sets do have their disadvantages. The lower-priced kits are much more lightweight than their acoustic counterparts. While this can be good when you're moving them, it can also allow for the electronic drums to shift around a little while you're playing, depending on how energetic your drumming style is. Also, if you're used to acoustic drums, you'll need to be careful when adjusting the placement or angle of a lower-priced electronic drum set. The adjusting nuts may be of lightweight plastic which can be snapped off by someone using too much force. so just tighten them enogh to hold. Also, if you like to use brushes, you'll find they won't work on many electronic drums - so check the specs beforehand.
But for most musicians, an electronic drum kit can make playing a more enjoyable experience, whether as their sole instrument or an addition to an acoustic set. And if you're just starting out, lower-priced electronic drum sets make great sense as a learning tool. Once you're experienced, you can move up to a higher-quality acoustic or electronic set.
